Love tokens were popular during the Victorian era. They were often exchanged between sweethearts as “tokens of love”. This practice seems to have originated in Great Britain in the early 1800’s and was most popular in the United States and in Canada shortly after the Civil War until early 1890’s. Love tokens are generally defined as coins on which one side (or sometimes both sides) has been smoothed down and engraved with names, phrases and or scenes, as well as symbols of romance such as hearts, birds, flowers and sets of initials in love knots.
